Let's unite as valued Stream Teamers for another West Tyson County Park cleanup in the lower floodplain area. We'll gather at the West Tyson North Prairie Loop Trail Head parking area on Monday, January 20, 2025, around 8:30 AM. We'll sign waivers, discuss the safety issues, walk to the site, and work until about 1 PM. The cleanup site is approximately 1 mile from the parking lot. There are no restrooms at the site.
Your volunteer efforts will make a significant difference in restoring the beauty of our park. The recent November 2024 floods left a large amount of trash and large objects in the low floodplains of West Tyson County Park. One awful spot has 2 RVs, a boat, and several tires. This event will attempt to remove this debris along with fridges, tires, and other debris scattered about the floodplain. If the floodplain is too wet to use machinery, we will still try to gather and bag up as much litter as possible and make piles to remove when conditions are more favorable. (The cleanup of this area may require multiple days to complete. Please check for updates in the Discussion section of the Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/2385436005134112/)
The safety of our volunteers is our top priority. The Department of Natural Resources' Environmental Emergency Response Team has already cleared the site of many orphaned containers. Yet, other closed containers may be discovered during that cleanup, requiring them to remain on site until MoDNR EER can evaluate them. We must separate the tires and scrap metal from the regular trash. St. Louis County Parks will be providing a dumpster.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and terrain, including long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sturdy shoes. Bring your water bottle and snacks. We will provide some snacks and goodies. Some places may require boots and/or sturdy shoes. Most of the area is on semi-dry surfaces, but also come prepared to clean up on unstable drift piles. The Missouri Stream Team Program will supply gloves and trash bags.
We are truly grateful for your willingness to help. Your time and effort are invaluable to us. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Bernie at 314-956-2101 or Brian at 314-606-0755.
