National Public Lands Day 2024

National Public Lands Day 2024

Saturday September 28, 2024
8 am until noon.

Join the USFWS for a day of work at the Boone's Crossing Unit of the Big Muddy Fish and Wildlife Refuge.

Volunteers will remove invasive bush honeysuckle by cutting with hand saws and hand-pulling smaller plants. Gloves, loppers and hand saws will be provided. Event hosts will apply herbicide to cut stumps to prevent re-growth. We will also provide booklets that help identify invasive honeysuckles, in comparison to the native species.

If time allows, we will conduct a "bioblitz" of the area using iNaturalist. Participants will inventory plants, animals, and anything else they see into the iNaturalist database. It is a free app you can download to your smartphone or tablet, or you can share a device to team up if you are not able to use the app. Depending on the size of the group, we may break up into two groups, one for each activity, and rotate at a set time so everyone has a chance for both activities.
Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Closed-toed shoes or boots are required. Please bring a water bottle and snacks for yourselves. We will provide a water jug for refills, bug spray and sunscreen.

We will meet at the brown kiosk just across the levee. For those unfamiliar with the area, navigate to Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex, Field CVAC A-3, cross over the levee at the GPS point provided (38.677030, -90.646930), and you will see the kiosk. There is no access road across the levee, so cars can be parked at the practice fields.
