SUMMARY:Big Muddy Speaker Series Feb. 2025
DESCRIPTION:Missouri River Relief’s Big Muddy Speaker Series\, hosted by Greenway Network\n7 p.m. presentation (6 p.m. social hour) at Bike Stop Cafe\, 701 S Riverside Drive\, St. Charles\, MO 63301 \nFor the Love of Bugs\, by Biologist and Master Naturalist Devan Rupel \nIt’s nearly Valentine’s Day! As we trade cards denoting our love for one another\, we must also consider where love is lacking in our lives\, namely some commonly misunderstood tiny friends: bugs! There is truly nothing more romantic than bugs. From the shellac on our chocolates\, to the mites in our eyelashes exchanged in “butterfly kisses”\, bedbugs\, lovebugs\, and kissing bugs- it’s hard to argue that this holiday should not be dedicated to them! \nIn this presentation\, Devan Rupel will share her favorite bug facts and finds of the year and grant listeners a new perspective to deepen their appreciation for the creatures working day and night to bring them food\, medical advancements\, and healthy soil. We often focus on developing appreciation for pollinators that create food for humans\, but neglect some of the strangely fascinating things that we can learn about the environment around us through nature’s more curious Valentines. \nInsects incite strong feelings in all of us. Disgust and fear tend to reign supreme in this conversation. Still\, by shifting our perspective\, we can turn fear into fascination and grow closer to the most immediate natural world around us. Come get to know who’s visiting your porch light and what creepy crawlies may be rummaging around in your basement. Bring your burning bug questions and braveness as you’ll have the opportunity to meet Giant Hissing Cockroaches (they’re friendly) and munch a cricket cookie!

SUMMARY:Big Muddy Speaker Series March 2025
DESCRIPTION:Missouri River Relief’s Big Muddy Speaker Series\, hosted by Greenway Network\n7 p.m. presentation (6 p.m. social hour) at Bike Stop Cafe\, 701 S Riverside Drive\, St. Charles\, MO 63301 \nWhat’s Your Watershed? by Libby Reuter and Virginia Woulfe-Beile \nSince 2011\, Watershed Cairns artists Libby Reuter and Joshua Rowan have been asking “What’s your watershed?” along the tributaries of the Mississippi River Watershed. They temporarily place and photograph luminous glass sculptures that capture the enchantment of water in different environments. An interactive map on watershedcairns.com visualizes the interconnected rivers\, wetlands\, and lakes nurturing the central 40 percent of the United States. Reuter will share a few of their images and stories from the rivers’ origins. The under-appreciated heart of that vital water web is in St. Louis Metro\, Missouri\, and Illinois. At our meeting\, Libby Reuter and Virginia Woulfe-Beile co-director of the Piasa Palisades Chapter\, Illinois Sierra Club\, will introduce a new map/signage project designed to draw attention to the confluence of the Missouri\, Mississippi\, and Illinois Rivers.\nVisit the Big Muddy Speaker Series webpage to learn more: https://bigmuddyspeakers.org/stcharles/

SUMMARY:Rockwood Island USFW Refuge Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Fish and Wildlife (USFW) is reaching out to multiple organizations seeking volunteers to help plant some of the 22\,000 tree seedlings acquired for the Rockwood Island Wildlife Refuge. Their goal is to diversify the species composition of the refuge from monotypic cottonwood to a 15 species-rich bottomland forest typical of the region to better serve wildlife for multiple generations. While the refuge is on the East side of the Mississippi (about 8 miles south of Chester\, Illinois)\, knowing the importance of wetlands to our watersheds\, our Stream Team has decided to partner with USFW and ask other volunteers to join the endeavor. \nWhen: May 7\, 8\, 9\, and 10 \nTime: Anytime starting from 9am for as long as people want to help. USFW will be there from 8:30am to late afternoon each day. \nWhere: Illinois Route 3 to Rockwood\, Il; coordinates: 37.83666\, -89.70338  Map: https://tinyurl.com/msprda73 This is an unimproved road. Drive under the railroad trestle and follow it back (approximately 200 yards) to the refuge parking lot. \nWhat: Bareroot tree planting using dibble bars (stooping\, bending\, walking over irregular floodplain forest). \nNeed: Bring drinking water\, snack if wanted\, and a desire to restore our wetlands. \nMore information can be found here\, including detailed directions and how to plant trees successfully using a Dribble Bar: https://tinyurl.com/mrxu9teh \nPlease be sure to notify one of the following if you\, or a group\, plan to attend and when: \nJared Nance\, Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge:  Cell: 573-754-2431  /  Email: jared_nance@fws.gov \nor  Jan McIlwee\, Stream Team volunteer: Cell: 314-303-6419  / Email: janm@streamteam5168.org

DESCRIPTION:“Peruque Creek Watershed Alliance” by Kelly Dunlap\, PCWA representative\nMissouri River Relief’s Big Muddy Speaker Series\, hosted by Greenway Network\n7 p.m. Presentation (6 p.m. Social Hour)\nBike Stop Cafe\, 701 S Riverside Drive\, St. Charles\, MO 63301 \nJoin us at the St. Charles edition of the Big Muddy Speaker Series on Wednesday\, May 14 to learn more about the newly reformed Peruque Creek Watershed Alliance\, how local residents and communities are collaborating and cross-training to improve water quality\, and ways you can get involved and provide input. \nPeruque Creek watershed spans parts of Warren and St. Charles counties in Missouri\, feeds into Lake Saint Louis\, and ultimately drains to the Mississippi River. The Peruque Creek Watershed Alliance is focused on improving and protecting stream water quality. It brings together local governments\, organizations\, and community members to address current issues and promote sustainable watershed management. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources recently collected public comments on a draft Watershed Plan and a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) report for Total Suspended Solids in Peruque Creek. One of the Alliance’s first goals is to launch a multi-location stream data collection effort across the watershed. \nVisit the Big Muddy Speaker Series page to learn more: https://bigmuddyspeakers.org/stcharles/

SUMMARY:Special Handling Short Course: Tornado Trash
DESCRIPTION:The work of cleaning up the bits and pieces of debris that cannot be scooped up by heavy machinery has to wait until the most urgent tasks of safely clearing streets\, securing buildings\, and meeting the physical and emotional needs of the citizens have been addressed. It is a huge task and it is going to take a while. \nIn preparation for those clean ups\, the Team Leader Academy crew has been updating our list of materials that require special handling to include the sorts of things that we are likely to find in greater quantities than usual. \nIf you are planning a litter clean up\, want to lead volunteers on a litter clean up\, or just want to volunteer yourself\, attend one of our one-hour sessions to help prepare you for this work. We will cover what to look for\, how to handle it\, and who and when to call when it is more than you can handle. Our goal is to get as many people as possible ready to join in the many calls for clean-up volunteers that are coming. \n6 pm TUESDAY May 27 at Alpine Shop (440 N Kirkwood Rd\, Kirkwood\, MO 63122) \nEmail greenwaynetwork@gmail.com if you plan to attend. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Big Muddy Speaker Series August 2025
DESCRIPTION:Islands of Life: How Urban Parks Support Birds Along the Mississippi Flyway – Presentation by Jodi Devonshire PhD\, for Missouri River Relief’s Big Muddy Speaker Series\, hosted in St Charles by Greenway Network.7 p.m. presentation (6 p.m. Social Hour)Bike Stop Cafe\, 701 S Riverside Dr\, St Charles\, MO 63301 \nEvery spring and fall\, millions of birds travel the Mississippi Flyway—a vast migratory corridor formed by the Mississippi River\, its tributaries\, and connected wetlands. These birds depend on habitat along this ancient pathway for food\, rest\, and shelter during their long journeys. But as our cities grow\, development fragments this critical habitat into small “islands” of green space surrounded by buildings\, roads\, and concrete. The connections between these habitat patches become increasingly broken\, creating challenges for the wildlife that depend on them. \nDr. Jodi Devonshire will present findings from her 2011 study conducted with researchers at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Her team examined bird diversity and abundance in restored and remnant parks throughout the Greater St. Louis area. Their data reveals just how vital these urban oases are to the millions of birds traveling the Mississippi Flyway—and why protecting these spaces matters more than ever. \nDr. Devonshire specializes in environmental education and its impact in urban areas. She has taught various science courses\, community enrichment programs and science methods classes at both St. Charles Community College and the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Currently she\, with her husband Tony\, manages the Bike Stop Cafe\, a restaurant\, bike rental\, Katy trail tour and service company they founded in St. Charles\, MO.
