SUMMARY:Big Muddy Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:BMSS is now at Bike Stop Cafe\, 701 S. Riverside Drive in Saint Charles – also accessible from Main Street at the corner of Perry. \nSocial hour – 6:00 PM\, Presentation – 7:00 PM \nGreenway Network Board member Kelly Dunlap – “Introducing the Stream Care Guide” \nThe Stream Care Guide was designed by the Soil and Water Conservation Department\, City of Wentzville\, and St. Charles County to inform and educate all residents of their role in their watersheds. Everyone wants clean water\, but not everyone understands the connection between activities in their watershed and the effects on water. This guide takes the reader on a journey to understand their county’s watersheds\, streams\, and rivers; to locate themselves on a map within their watersheds and to visualize “when it rains\, it drains”. They discover how their yard drains to a particular stream and on to the next until flowing into the mighty rivers on their way to the Gulf. Readers also discover how they impact water quality and how they can help their local streams and waterbodies. \nThe link to the guide is near the bottom of – https://www.wentzvillemo.gov/departments/public_works/stormwater_management/our_watersheds_and_streams.php \nIf it’s nice out (not raining and 60ish+ degrees) we will sit outside.

SUMMARY:Mission: Clean Stream/ Greg Poleski Memorial Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:March 24 UPDATE: The Greg Poleski Memorial Clean-up at Cora Island\, scheduled for Saturday March 25\, will be rescheduled. Unfortunately\, the parking lot is too muddy\, and if it continues to rain\, the access road can become impassible. \nMission: Clean Stream is taking place all across the County on Saturday. Most of the other locations do not have the same access issues that Cora has\, so they typically take place rain or shine. We would love it if you would participate at one of those sites. You may contact the municipalities directly to see if they can use your help\, or you can check on the Mission: Clean Stream and/or their Facebook pages or websites for updates. SUMMARY:Special Handling Seminar for Team Leaders and Clean Up Organizers
DESCRIPTION:Each year Greenway Network\, in conjunction with MO Stream Team\, brings together experts from all areas to talk about how to deal with trash and situations that are outside of the usual straws and water bottles.  This includes things like tanks and barrels that might contain toxic substances\, needles and sharps\, medical waste and things that might require the intervention of law enforcement.  We know these things don’t happen every day\, but we want to make sure that team leaders and project coordinators are prepared for their unlikely occurrence. \nThis year the seminar will take place at the Headquarters of the USFWS’ Big Muddy Wildlife Refuge in Boonville from 9 am until 3 pm.  Lunch will be available.  A donation of $10 is suggested to offset the cost of the meal. \nRegistration for the on-line virtual option will open closer to the event. \nSpace is extremely limited. Register below: \n\n\n\n\nTeam Leader Special Handling Training Session\nTeam Leader Special Handling Training Session\nThis virtual training is for anyone who is planning or pre-scouting for cleanups and works with volunteers cleaning up floodplains\, rivers and streams. It addresses how to identify\, mark and when and where to report hazards such as barrels\, tanks\, needles and more. The virtual and in person sessions will start at 9 am on the last Saturday in February and run until approximately 3 pm with a few short breaks. This is made possible through our use of plows to remove the top layer of snow from the pavement and the use of road salt to melt the rest. But where does all that salt go? And what happens when it gets there? \nDanelle Haake is the Director of Illinois RiverWatch and a Stream Ecologist with the National Great Rivers Research & Education Center in Alton\, Illinois. She has worked in the water quality and ecological restoration realms for over 20 years\, including developing water quality management plans in Iowa\, managing reconstructed prairie and woodland habitats with Missouri Botanical Garden\, and studying the impact of road salt on stream ecosystems. Since 2010\, she has been coordinating community science participants in an effort to better understand the connections between road salt and water quality. \nThe Illinois RiverWatch Network is a volunteer monitoring initiative coordinated by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC℠). RiverWatch is the only statewide biological monitoring program that provides volunteers a hands-on opportunity to become stewards of our local waterways by monitoring stream habitat and water quality. The program was originally established in 1995 and has since expanded to the statewide level\, with over 200 participants monitoring streams annually.

SUMMARY:Mississippi River Plastics Pollution Launch
DESCRIPTION:Greenway Network\, Inc is proud to be hosting the official launch of the Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative Pilot in St Louis. Similar events are being held in St Paul\, MN and Baton Rouge\, LA. The purpose of this project is to identify what plastic is getting into the Mississippi River\, how much there is and to figure out how best to reduce or eliminate it. It is part of a global project sponsored by the United Nations and the National Geographic Society to reduce ocean plastic pollution. \nYou can help out by joining in one of the many clean up activities taking place across the region and by helping to collect the data needed by the scientists studying the problem. You can collect data yourself\, in your neighborhood at your convenience by downloading the Marine Data Tracker App to your phone and using the MRCTI list to record your discoveries. \nThe official St Louis launch of the project takes place on April 17 from 9 am until noon. Look for a kickoff promptly at 9 with a welcome from local officials and representatives from the project. Staff from the Marine Debris Tracker development team will be on hand to assist you with learning about the application and teams from the League of Watershed Guardians\, Greenway Network and the Mississippi River Water Trails Association will be picking up trash in the park and along the Riverfront trail. Bags and gloves will be provided by Missouri Stream Team. \nThis effort is being led by the mayors of the Mississippi Rivers Cities and Towns Initiative and Rotary International. \nRegister Here
